Delhi to Get New Look For CWG, 2010

For the upcoming Common Wealth Games, Delhi is dressing up in new attires. To mark this mega event as a memorable sporting fiesta for both sport personalities and spectators, the Government of India is keeping no stone unturned.

In the run up to the Commonwealth Games which is scheduled from October 3rd to October 14th, the Indian Government is spending $17.5 billion for overall infrastructural development of Delhi. Being a host city for CWG, Delhi is undergoing major face lift to build adequate infrastructure by 2010.

The emphasis is placed on overall city beautification, traffic management, parking space, security and health services. To woo more number of sport buffs and tourists from all corner of the globe, both Delhi government and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is working really hard.

Infrastructure:

For 2010's Common Wealth Games, Delhi government and New Delhi Municipal Council has taken several initiatives such as development of mass rapid transit system, construction of new highways, development of public transport system, construction of new power plants. Services like water utility and health care services are also taken into consideration.

A modern Games Village is being built on the banks of Yamuna which will accommodate 8500 athletes and officials. This Games Village stretches to a vast area of 63.5 hectares. New games venues are under construction and the old ones have been renovated for this upcoming multi-sport event. And for providing accommodation facilities to spectators, construction of large number of hotels and resorts are undergoing in the various nook and corner of the city.

Even projects for beautification of the city is also undertaken by the state government. One such example is India Gate. Located at the heart of Delhi city, India Gate is one of the beautiful legacy of Britishers and is a major attraction of the city. NDMC is taking care of the area nearby to India Gate and renovating it. Other places which were renovated for CWG are entire Cannaught Place region, various historical monuments belonging to Mughal empire etc.

Transport:

Transport is one another important sector which is keeping the government on its toes. Plans are underway to construct new flyovers, cloverleafs and bridges to provide connectivity to the games stadiums, hospitals and Games Village.

National highways are being expanded and widened. Plans are created to make Delhi's both ring roads signal free. For linking Ring road to Lodhi Road, a four-lane, 2.2-km-long tunnel is proposed which will link Games Village to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

High Capacity Bus Systems are planned to be operational on 9 corridors before commencement of games. Delhi Metro is also being expanded to nearby Noida and Gurgaon suburb to accommodate more people during the 2010 games.

Indira Gandhi International Airport is undergoing a major revampment. A two tier terminal will be constructed by 2010 games. The bottom area of this terminal will be used for arrivals while top level for departures. There will be 130 check-in counters, 55 aerobridges, 30 parking bays, 72 immigration counters, 15 X-ray screening areas and much more at IGI by the year 2010. The airport will be connected to the city via a 6-lane highway (NH8) and Delhi Metro.

Energy:

To meet the energy requirements for Commonwealth Games 2010, New Delhi is taken large power production initiative. It is believed that this new power production projects would increase the power production to 7000 megawatt from the current 4500 megawatt.

With these new developments, Delhi city is all set to host XIX Common Wealth Games 2010.
